A Long trip either through Australia or Hong Kong to Port Moresby. Travel within the country itself is by small plane, boat or canoe, thus it takes another day of in-country travel to get to the areas we visited.

Our underwater research areas were centered near Alotau province and the islands around Kavieng on northern New Ireland.
Side trips to the Highlands while not research related were a must. Looking for the sunken ship Masawa (ESE of Lae) was another interesting interlude.
By far most of our time was spent underwater in the Kavieng and Alotau areas. Two new fish species were found and named near Alotau, and a WWII Two man submarine was found sunk on a sandy bottom in the Kavieng area.
